Makeup practices from Coven

Makeup practices from Coven

Papa legba in American Horror story , 15.03.16, digital image

This image is of Papa Legba, he is a legendary voodoo master in charge of the crossroads between the living and the dead. I admire the makeup practices chosen for this character, the makeup artist has combined the living and the dead in this look, the pale face and red eyes represents a dead, evil and lifeless soul. The white pigment illustrates a skull face and the skulls decorated on his hat add to this effect, his hair is dreaded to show the native African and Caribbean hair style and reminds us of its religious beginning.

Marie Laveau's makeup is a modern version of an African queen, she wears make to accentuate her features; red lips, arched eye brows and a flick, this brings her face upwards with the shape of her cheek bones.

I admire the makeup for this scene, Cordelia Foxx, one of the main characters in the program was badly burnt from acid. She goes blind but later in the series she gains her sight back. This makeup can be made using latex or gelatine, by applying it to the skin and during its drying process it can be pulled and manipulated to create textures that look like realistic burns and blisters on the skin. The products can then be coloured using super colour to create a sore and bloody design.

This image illustrates the makeup practices for the coven witches well; the look is defined by the dark eyes and pale face, subtle pink lips and bangs. The makeup for the witches is subtle, apart from a change in lip colour the look is consistent throughout the series and throughout the witches.
